Office Assistant – Part-Time position

The Language Exchange is looking for a part-time office assistant to help run its one-of-a-kind operation. For the past 28 years, The Language Exchange has been Portland’s #1 resource for the promotion and learning of foreign languages and the cultures they embody — with an initial focus on French which has remained but expanded to include on and off up to 10 languages. This dynamic environment has attracted a wonderful community of open-minded individuals and has given rise to numerous long-lasting friendships.

This is the environment the right candidate will call “work,” a place where we discuss travel plans and cultural idiosyncrasies, trade language breakthroughs, and idiom eccentricities. Needless to say, if Bouclette, the office toy poodle, has not yet brought a smile to your face, your first phone call will.

The candidate’s responsibilities in supporting the administrative needs of the school’s small office will include but not be limited to customer service (in person, on the phone or in writing), data entry, online advertising, social media campaign coordinating, and event coordinating.

The ideal candidate will be:

– college educated or have equivalent work experience,
– be outgoing and friendly,
– be efficient and able to manage his/her time to maximize work hours,
– be comfortable and knowledgeable in social media,

The ideal candidate will have:

– native-speaker fluency in English,
– proven data entry skills for speed and accuracy
– proven experience and proficiency in major Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
– demonstrable and exceptional written and verbal communication skills
–  the ability to organize and manage multiple priorities,
– the ability to learn and retain detailed information quickly
– experience with online advertising,
– proven record in appropriately dealing with customer service
– the willingness to take direction and feedback well
–  the ability to learn from one’s mistakes with a positive and proactive demeanor

The number of weekly hours will be variable and flexible but typically comprised between 10-20 hours. This is a long-term position with potential for added hours and responsibilities in the future.
