These conversation sessions are not as structured as our typical group classes and resemble more social gatherings. They are designed for advanced-beginning through advanced students who want to practice Portuguese in a relaxed setting all the while being corrected by a native-speaking Portuguese instructor. What better way to unwind at the end of the day!
We will use different mediums to engage everyone’s conversational skills. The weekly meetings will touch upon various aspects of everyday life and culture in the Portuguese-speaking world. You will read short articles, view video clips, discuss movie scenes and stories, listen to songs, or observe paintings while learning and reviewing important language structures in a fun way.
If you want to strengthen your conversation skills, acquire new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions, or refresh your knowledge of basic grammar and verb tense use, this class is for you. We will have you use the Portuguese language exclusively, even at a basic, elementary level; you will learn strategies to keep the conversation going and encourage native speakers to engage in conversation with you; you will also better your listening comprehension abilities.
The least advanced speakers have to be willing to not always understand all the nuances of what is being said and to stick to Portuguese as they ask for clarifications or explanations, and the more advanced speakers have to embrace the challenge of finding alternate ways to convey their point to help clarify or explain what they previously said. Everyone will benefit from these conversation practice sessions.
While little preparation/homework will be required making it an ideal solution for busy people who are pressed for time, please keep in mind that the success of these conversation sessions lies on everyone being able to engage at his or her level and preparation might be key.
