Journaling as a method to learning French or simply recording your favorite French travel moments: this is what we are offering to present in this workshop.

Rita Swidrowski is an artist, art teacher (She holds a Master’s degree in Creative Arts in Learning from Lesley College), and avid language learner who loves speaking the French language, reading French books, and traveling to France and Québec. When in Portland, Rita continues to partake in artivities at the Language Exchange where she began rekindling her French learning adventure in 2000. As such she also participated in two immersion trips to Provence during which she recorded her encounters and observations in a whimsical, creative journaling way. Rita has taught art to various age groups and cannot think of anything more fun and rewarding than sharing her passion for art and learning foreign languages… in French! She currently teaches a bi-monthly class on visual and sketchbook journaling in Belfast where she now resides. The focus is on the combination of writing, poetry, and sketching.

Co-taught – for language content -- by French teacher Valérie Guillet, Rita will first present her unique language learning process, her journals, and her art work (all of which form the “Rita Method of Learning French”). She will then lead us through the creation of a simple handmade accordion book so that participants have a support to begin organizing and recording their own content with elements they will have been asked to bring from home, or French study notes or drawing or whatever it might be.  Working together on art is often a great place for informal conversations, and when those are in French…can you think of anywhere else you would want to be or anything else you would rather do on a wintry Saturday morning?

This workshop is for the novice, the experienced artist, and anyone in between interested in learning something new to enhance his/her foreign language learning experience while adding a touch of art or color to it and for anyone interested in documenting their next trip through the journaling process. Rita will have onhand a number of published French travel journals, books about visual journaling, and her own journals.

Only requirements: to be willing to speak French only and have fun.
